A free action-packed battle royale

PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS—also known simply as PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS—is a  free-to-play multiplayer action shooter video game wherein you must survive across an ever-shrinking map. Developed by PUBG Studios and published by KRAFTON, Inc., this battle royale game features fast-paced shooter gameplay and realistic-looking 3D graphics.

Similar to other battle royale titles like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is a popular online multiplayer game with a large player base—with almost half a billion players in total. Before it became a free-to-play game, it sold more than 75 million copies worldwide.

Why is PUBG very famous?

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is a battle royale that pits you against up to 99 other players in the ultimate war for survival. You can choose to play either solo or team up with 2 - 3 other people to form a squad. The game starts with you and everyone else on an airplane. It will fly across the map and you need to decide on a location to parachute toward to start scavenging for weapons and supplies.

The main gameplay consists of gunning down enemy players and just trying to stay alive using your surroundings. You can play in either first-person or third-person POV. The playable safe zone will start shrinking in size after a while, so players will be forced to confront each other in order to become the last man or team standing. What’s great about this game is that each round you play will always turn out to be different due to the nature of the gameplay.

Weapons, items, and strongholds will be reset and randomized every time and players will either learn from their mistakes or make more as they go. There’s always a risk in choosing your drop-off point, too. Landing early on the map lets you gain basic equipment fast and get the jump on enemies while landing much later near the middle of the map offers a better selection of loot amidst numerous other players. Aside from loot, players can make use of the surrounding buildings and vehicles as part of their strategy.

Is PUBG: Battlegrounds pay to win?

Another cool battle royale element that makes PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS addictive is the periodic map size decrease that happens every few minutes. This forces players to keep moving and face danger head-on, as well as culling any stragglers near the border of the map. If you get caught outside the safe zone, you’ll take damage until you escape it or die. There are also some random bombings in the area, too, and you can get caught in the crossfire if you don’t pay attention.

Sometimes, what comes from the sky can be beneficial, though. Item airdrops randomly occur throughout the match or by just summoning a plane with a flare gun. These events will give out highly-prized loot packages and can be found on random spots on the map—made visible with its billowing red smoke. However, you should expect that this will attract players eager for better equipment so fierce fighting can happen over them.

Once a winner has been determined, all players will be awarded points depending on their performance. The in-game currency is called “G-Coins” and it can be spent on crates containing cosmetic items for character and weapon models. You can also purchase crates with real money, but don’t worry as none of these premium items affect the gameplay or your chances to win in any way. They are purely cosmetic and for bragging rights only.

Things are getting better and better

Like other online multiplayer action games, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS gets version updates and patches that aim to bring life to its gameplay and keep you entertained for a long while. Some of these contain major updates while others only add minor changes and bug fixes that improve the game’s quality of life.

Patch 22.2, in particular, has several new additions and improvements to make gameplay much smoother for everyone:

  • New weapon: FAMAS assault rifle
  • Weapon balancing
  • Loot recommendation improvements
  • Game mode changes
  • UI updates
  • Lobby updates for Survival Mastery
  • Workshop additions
  • Performance and bug fixes

There’s a new weapon added to the Care Package goods. It is the FAMAS, a French-made bullpup assault rifle with a high rate of fire. It has three fire modes: Single, Burst, and Full-Auto. Scopes up to the 6x can be attached to it and its effective range is 400 meters with 39 damage points per shot. It’s available on every map but only spawns in Care Packages, Secret Rooms, Lab Camps, Supply Drops, and Pillar Boxes only. Take note that it’s unavailable in “Custom Match – Esports Mode.”

Weapons have been balanced even further in both Normal and Ranked matches. For one, the AUG has been removed from Care Packages and will now be a world-spawned weapon that’s available on every map. Its and the M416’s recoils have also been readjusted. The spawn rates for the Shotgun, P90, and Heavy Stock have also been slightly increased.

The loot recommendation feature will now highlight lootable weapon attachments and the inventory will also highlight recommended ammo/attachments/equipment that you currently have. These can be toggled off through the settings, if you want. Various world adjustments have been implemented, too. Decorative objects like billboards have been added to Erangel, Miramar, and Sanhok maps for the game’s 6th Anniversary celebration. Map changes like hills and a dirt race track were also added to block sightlines.

A few guns have been added and removed from game modes, like the AUG being added to Team Deathmatch and Custom Matches but being removed from Esports Mode – Global Rule Settings. The in-game user interface for weapon and attachment descriptions has been revamped for easier reading. Now, it’ll display essential details, such as Damage per Bullet, DPS, Rate of Fire, Muzzle Velocity, Stability, and Effective Range.

A Tier system has been added to Survival Mastery for the Lobby. There are new rewards, like a Supply Loot Cache for the Normal reward per level up regardless of your Tier. The Overview page on both your Career and Profile tabs will now display your current leaderboard rank of the Season. Plus, new item sets have been added to the Hunter’s Chest, Archivist’s Chest, and Special Crafting. Lastly, there are several bug fixes applied to the game, which you can read in the official patch notes.

Ride in style

PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS’ 25.1 patch update is packed with numerous new features for players to look forward to. One of the most exciting events to happen in this update is the game’s collaboration with Aston Martin with three exclusive vehicle skins to take your ride to the next level.  In addition to this, you’ll also be able to obtain an exclusive Aston Martin container in the starting areas of major maps, such as Erangel, Miramar, Sanhok, Vikendi, Taego, and Deston.

Take note, however, that the containers will only become available once you’ve equipped at least one of the available event-exclusive vehicle skins. Notably, if multiple skins are equipped, the system will randomly display one. These will all be available in Normal Match, Ranked, Casual Mode, and Custom Match - Normal Match. Both the vehicles and containers will also be utilized as soon as you begin a match and will only disappear once you’ve boarded a plane.

New maps and improvements

In the 25.1 update, PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS also presents new areas in Miramar for players to freely explore. These new areas include Partona, a lively circular village that will replace the former area of Los Higos; the Resort, which is an area perched atop a hill with breathtaking sea views; and the Truck Stop, which will replace the Junkyard area. A new map—Boardwalk—is also introduced exclusively for Team Deathmatch, offering diverse combat opportunities.

The new Sandstorm feature will also replace the Red Zone on Miramar. Gradually depleting players' health regardless of location, this sandstorm hampers visibility, slows movement, and even affects electronics. The inclusion of the Zipline feature also enables fluid navigation across locations. Equipped with two ropes, they provide a straight-line movement option, allowing multiple players to use them simultaneously.

Best of all, this update introduces the Team Suggest feature, which recommends players based on team history and online activity. Priority is given to players who have frequently teamed up, enhancing squad formation. Up to three players can be suggested, and actions can be taken based on the lobby status. This feature streamlines the team-building process for a more engaging gameplay experience.

The best battle royale game around

PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS is quite popular all over the world for a good reason. Not only is its gameplay highly fun and addicting, but it encourages players to keep trying and learn how to be better whenever they lose—making things balanced and fair for everyone. Plus, it has amazing 3D graphics and all premium items are simply for cosmetic purposes. If you want a battle royale shooter game for a beginner, this is a title worth checking out.
